happy national coffee day!

caffè americano
happy national coffee day everybody! i can't believe it's finally here.  'tis the season to sing coffee carols, hang the coffee wreath, exchange coffee day gifts,  decorate the annual coffee day tree, etc...

ok so truthfully, i just found out today was national coffee day earlier this week.  coffee and i have become good friends in the past year or so, since my regular 8-5 job requires waking up a bit earlier than i would like.  so i thought i'd share my love for this magic little bean and the different ways i like to experience it.

most days i enjoy my free flavia coffee at work.  one of the perks i get for working in a lawyers office.  it's a single serving coffee system much like a k-cup machine, but i think it's much better.  it can even make lattes, cappuccinos, espresso, tea, mochas, and iced drinks.  sure it's not a true espresso machine, but it comes pretty darn close for how quick and easy it is.  so many different flavors to choose from, it's a great little machine!

starbucks is my goto coffee shop when i'm out and about.  i usually get a grande americano, iced americano, or sometimes a java chip frappuccino (i usually feel really guilty when i get one of these cause it's basically a milkshake with a little tiny bit of coffee in it, so they are few and far between)

at home my favorite roast is trader joe's organic fair trade five country espresso blend. (see below)  if you like dark roasts, give this one a try...it's amazing in a french press.  i don't usually add anything to my coffee (straight black please!) so i like coffee that can stand up well on it's own without adding to it.

crazy good
i hope everyone is having a merry coffee day! how do y'all like to enjoy your coffee? favorite local coffee shops / roasts / etc?

sometimes a little pooh is all it takes...

pooh going undercover for a covert operation
ever had one of those days? i'm sure you have...

everything seems good when you wake up.  just another day, nothing out of the ordinary planned. then you realize your registration sticker never made it from the mailbox to the license plate of your car, so you have to spend your lunch hour at the dmv trying to get a replacement (ok ok, that was a little specific, but i'm sure you've had those things that throw a curveball into your day)

who knew something so simple as not having cash on my person whilst in the dmv would cause such a headache.  i always seem to conveniently forget anytime i go that you can only do one of two things to pay at the dmv; cash or check.  so boring story short, i had to leave the dmv, get cash, come back, wait in line AGAIN, just to hand the lady 20 bucks and her give me a tiny red sticker with "12" and my license plate number on it. (if you've seen my car, you know i LOVE stickers.  this sticker, however, i did not)

so my point of this blog is not to give a boring narrative of my lunch hour at the dmv and how it ruined my day...but how a little bear named pooh made me feel so much better.

pooh is my homeboy, him and i go way back.  my mom claims that "pooh" was one of the first words i learned how to say (whether that word had an "h" on the end of it or not is up for debate, as it is a silent "h", therefore no one can truly know for sure) it is one of my favorite childhood cartoons, and i remember watching pooh and his friends adventures in the hundred acre wood very often.  last night for our "stimulus tuesday" movie we saw "Winnie the Pooh" and it was great.  sure it wasn't as good as the movies / tv show i remember from my youth...but it still had everything it needed to make me feel like i was a little kid again.  i really want to go find copies of the older movies / tv episodes on dvd and re-watch them now just to relive those awesome childhood moments.

today i will leave you with two things, one of my favorite winnie the pooh songs (see below) and a question...what things from your childhood always bring back good memories and can make you feel better no matter what?

I'm just a little black rain cloud
hovering under the honey tree,
Only a little black rain cloud,
pay no attention to little me.

Everyone knows that a rain cloud
never eats honey, no, not a nip.
I'm just floating around over the ground,
wondering where I will drip.

music to my ears

i actually bought a cd! i haven't done that in awhile, cds are so 00's
hooray for new music! especially GOOD (oh my gosh, caps!) new music...i've been jamming out to some real gems on my lunch hour and commute to and from work the past few weeks, so i thought i'd share it with y'all what i've been listening too.  i've really been on a singer/songwriter kick lately...something about the personal touch of a not-overly pop song that i love.  i think i'm just a sap for well written love songs that most girls would swoon over if they were sung to/written about them (gah, i wish i could write songs like that)

first up is mat kearney - young love.  such an awesome, beat driven, up-beat cd.  perhaps it's because since his last album mat has gotten married (curses!) and so now he all happy and junk with his new wife, and it really does come out in these songs.  favorites off the album are count on me, chasing the light, and she got the honey...but the album as a whole is simply amazing, well done mat.

next up is the weepies - be my thrill.  the weepies have been a favorite for awhile, always simple folksy gold.  very good chill music just to sit around and do nothing to.  my favorite off the album right now is 'this is not a lullaby'

ben rector - into the morning is free from noisetrade! (link to it on the left) if i could play the piano like this guy and write such original heartfelt songs, you'd have to hide your daughters! (just kidding, no need to hide them, no really...please don't.  just hide them from ben ;) ) highlights include the beat, when a heart breaks, and white dress

this little jewel is also free off of noisetrade, trent dabbs' - southerner.  (shout out to lacey and her blog for this one, i think she's freakin' awesome and you should too!) very cool cd, it's hard to describe (acoustic awesomeness?), but worth a listen cause it's free :D

lastly is a cd i just got this morning from a co-worker (left unnamed to protect the innocent) (just kidding, her name is janis, she's our receptionist and she's super nice) so i haven't had much time to listen to it, but here's an except from matt's website:
"Every song on this record is going to be inspired by the stories of your lives. I will be giving you a chance to write to me and submit your story. The story can be about anything. A defining moment in your life. A difficult time you’ve faced. Your own personal testimony. Or even what God means to you. It could be anything. There are no boundaries or limitations."
so the subject matter on the cd is from personal stories people sent it, some of it really heavy stuff at points when people were just probably at rock bottom and crying out to God.  i caught some snippets of it while going about my morning playing it in the background, and it kept catching my ear with some really good stuff.  i defiantly recommend you go check this one out.

well, that's all i have for now...i'll be back soon, with who knows what. (maybe even a recipe for bacon wrapped deep fried cookie dough tiramisu...yeah thats right, cookie dough, bacon, and frying makes anything better!)

sun and moon

anthem @ explore church

if you are the sun
then i wanna be the moon
i wanna reflect the light that shines from you
and if this is war
then i'm gonna draw my sword
this time i know what i am fighting for

God i wanna let you know
i want everything you are
i'm waiting for the morning light to show
a fire in the dark

shine your light
i wanna feel you now
god i need a miracle
take my heart
make it glow
shine your light
from the inside out
i wanna be more like you
if you are the sun
i wanna be the moon
i wanna be the moon

if love is a choice
then i need you to hear my voice
i'm the one knocking on your door making all this noise
whatever it takes
i give it all away
i wanna show my love in a thousand ways

God i wanna let you know
i love everything you are
i'm waiting for the morning light to show
a fire in the dark

shine your light
i wanna feel you now
God i need a miracle
take my heart
make it glow
shine your light
from the inside out
i wanna be more like you
if you are the sun
i wanna be the moon

i can't live a single day without you
i don't even want to try
and i won't take another step without your light
i need your light

shine
i wanna feel you now
God i need a miracle
take my heart
make it glow
shine your light
from the inside out
i wanna be more like you
if you are the sun
i wanna be the moon

if you are the sun
then i wanna be the moon
i wanna reflect the light that shines from

--phil wickham - sun and moon

i often forget in my short time of having a personal relationship with God that we are purposed with being a reflection of His greatness, and once i have forgotten that i get very anxious about living up to His standards.

i have become better about not trying to do it on my own and relying on God more and more, but "self" always seems to take over and want to drive.  i'm mainly challenged by this when it comes to my role in ministry, especially the music ministry.  i have to realize that i am not going to be "the best" at everything, and that's why the church works as a body and not just solely on one person.

the thing that brought the topic of this blog to my attention is recent song writing i have done with larron, the other half of "the blue plaids". i have always attempted to write lyrics to different songs and chord structures i've come up with, but without much success.  number 1; because i'm not that great of a singer and number 2; because i am not that creative when it comes to lyrical writing.

songwriting with larron however has become a very easy organic process.  we have written a few songs together, and arrangements of preexisting worship songs with our own twist.  this process helps me to realize how much ministry is not a solo project in any aspect, but it is, however, solely God behind it all.

our reflection of Him is what we should present everyday, 24/7, 365.

"And we all, with unveiled face, reflecting the glory of the Lord,
are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.
For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." 2 Corinthians 3:18

getting over the sophomore slump

my favorite spot on my back porch in apex
the sophomore slump is a very real thing in the world of music.  many musicians with an amazing first album have gone on to release a subsequent album that is no where near the level of greatness of the first.  i think this mostly comes from the fact that you have almost your entire life to devote to gathering material and ideas for that first album, and the second only a year, if even that, to come up with new material that doesn't sound too similar to your first album, but doesn't abandon the fan base that you have gathered from the first. it's a hard thing to recover from a terrible second album, but some still manage to rise out of the ashes of a sophomore slump and go on to greatness.

i got the same feeling when trying to decide what to write for my second blog.  i felt like i had more time to prepare, craft my thoughts, and finally release all of those ideas that i had pent up inside of me.

well the thing about writing a blog is, you can't just have one post.  simply introducing myself and never to be heard from again would not make me a true blogger, just a quitter.  so i decided to just go ahead and get it out in the open how i felt about still being in the early stages of blogging...it's very intimidating to write to an unknown audience.  you're never quite sure who will or won't read it, so i guess the best thing would be just write what i know, what i love, and those who decide to read will get a very accurate picture of me as a person.

so last time around, i let y'all know, fairly enthusiastically, that i love music

i decided to share some of my favorite videos of bands and artists that i listen to from youtube and maybe, just maybe, i will introduce you to something you've never heard of before but wish you had.

one of my favorite songwriters is brooke fraser of hillsong.  she's written such awesome songs as lead me to the cross, i will exalt you, and does amazing non-worship songwriting as well with her solo career (see above)

future of forestry is another band i've always loved...but with the release of their travel EPs, and getting to see them craft the songs from those three CDs in a live setting...you realize how amazing they are as musicians and they are now one of my favorite bands.  The song above is done with 3 people...yet it sounds like they have an army of people.

this is phil wickham...he has more passion for his music than anyone i have ever listened to...enough said...moving on...

oh...and this is phil's brother...evan...how freakin' talented is this family?!

phoenix...i saw them at koka booth amphitheater last year...it was the best concert i have ever been to. amazing musicians that make music that makes me happy

killing two birds with one stone on this one: kina grannis is one of the coolest chicks ever on youtube...she does amazing covers of different things on her channel.  in this video she is also doing a cover of one of my favorite songs from my favorite album from my favorite band currently.  bon iver (pronounced Bon EEE ver, not Bon EYE ver as i initially thought, thanks lacey for clarifying... pronunciation is not my strong suit)

mat kearney just came out with his third album, a great success after his sophomore slump, and i got to see him perform this song live in charlotte opening for owl city (yes i think owl city is freakin' awesome too).  he will be back in september in raleigh and i am totes going to that show, his new cd 'young love' is brilliant.

finally one of the most unique and interesting bands i have come across recently is 'the head and the heart'.  great instrumentation, great harmonies, complex song structure, and it all comes together to make something that sounds so unique and awesome.  they will be here as well in september, and i will be seeing them live.

until next time...i hope i have entertained you yet again.  if this is your first time here, welcome! you showed up late...so please take a seat in the back and try not to bother the people that got here before you! ;D

blog titles, a plethora of pictures, ALL CAPS, and a crash course in how my brain works...

hey there, my name is eric.  welcome to what is the first of what i hope is many interesting, funny, engaging, and thought provoking blog posts about stuff i like.

"why only stuff you like?" you may ask...

well it is my blog.  i think it would be pretty lame if i wrote about stuff i wasn't interested in.  that's like mr. rogers writing a blog about someone else's neighborhood, or justin bieber (this one's for you laceywriting a blog about needlepoint.  (i really have no idea...he may totally be into needlepoint...canadians do some weird stuff)

the first problem i ran into today once i decided to start writing a blog was:  what the heck should the title be???

a blog title is an important thing...its the essence of your entire blog.  its the first thing people see.  it's how you refer to it.  i felt like i was naming my first born, and trying to come up with some awesome cool name so all of the other blogs didn't make fun of him on the playground.  i wanted it to be clever, witty, and full of wordplay.  i wanted it to describe me as a person without being too specific or too general.  i wanted it to welcome in those who would be interested in reading it and shun those who weren't.

ok, i was getting a little carried away on the importance of a blog title.  but i felt like it was still important to capture the theme somehow of what i hope to accomplish here.  i've always felt like the things i engage myself in are a pretty eclectic mix of different things.  my brain needs a variety of stimuli to keep it happy and satisfied, especially when it comes to music, but other things as well.

I came up with "eclectic blend"

ok, first thing out of the way...naming the blog...phew that was rough...

now comes the fun part...writing about things i like!

first of all, i love Jesus.  He's a pretty awesome guy, and His dad is pretty cool too.  He's helped me through a lot, and i found Him at just the right time (well technically He was always there, i just wasn't to keen on looking for Him)

i was down in the dumps.  failing out of college.  addicted to this silly computer game called world of warcraft (seriously stay away from that crap, it sucks you in and never lets you go...but that's a whole 'nother blog post for another time), and a pretty sorry excuse for a human being at that point.

long story short (if you wanna read my testimony you'll have to go on my facebook and read it, i'll wait till you come back) He brought me out of nothingness, blessed me with so many wonderful new opportunities and friends, and i strive to be more like Him everyday.

secondly, i love music.  as you can see from the above picture i have a slight addiction to guitars. i love playing music, listening to music, sharing music, receiving music, music music music music!!!

ok....it's ok....im calm.  i just get a little excited about things sometimes,  especially music. chances are if you see me somewhere i will have a guitar with me, in hand, or in close proximity.  if you haven't noticed the background of the blog (please divert your attention there now, i'll wait) is my favorite guitar, my taylor.  more specifically a Taylor 414CE with a few modifications.  i have removed the pick guard, replaced the bridge pins, and there is a gold cross on the headstock.  i'm glad you two could meet. out of all of my guitars, it is the one i have spent the most time with getting it just the way i like it...and i'm very happy to have it in my arsenal.

theres just something about music that moves me...i love listening to most any genre...but every once and awhile i come across something awesome.  i can explain why i like certain things, theres just a feeling i get deep down while listening to something and i instantly know that i can always come back to that song and relive that same awesomeness forever. hopefully soon i can introduce you to some of those songs, but for now i wil move on for the sake of time.

thirdly (not sure if that's a word...but im making it one) i like taking pictures of fairly ordinary situations in unique ways.  i'm always taking pictures with my phone at random times...sometimes inspiration hits and i see something i want to try and capture in a picture, so i try my best to do so.  then i fiddle and faddle until i get a cool result, hopefully from a unique and interesting perspective.

fourthly, i love coffee.  grande americano please, no cream, no sugar.  now that i have a full time job that requires me to get up on a regular basis, coffee has become a good companion in those early mornings where i just can't get started on my own.  i just find it interesting the sheer magnitude of different drinks that can be concocted from a humble little bean.  tea is also a big favorite of mine, but coffee has something that tea can't bring to the table...it plays with so many other flavors so well.

so if you haven't noticed by now, i haven't really formatted this blog very well.  it's probably full of gramatical, punctuational, spelling, and many other things that would make an english teacher cry. im not an english teacher people! i don't really care enough to spend the time figuring out the proper way to use a semi colon (i always laugh a little in my head when i say colon)

one thing i've just avoided almost completely is the shift key, and especially the caps lock button.  I FEEL LIKE IM YELLING WHEN I USE ALL CAPS AND THATS NOT THE KIND OF PERSON I AM. see that was very unpleasant, i didn't like it either.  i'm sorry, i didn't mean to yell...i was just making a point (props to Lori for probably the most entertaining conversation about nothing in gmail chat today, simply by using the caps lock button)

well, i hope you had fun reading my first blog post...i had a ton of fun writing it (making myself laugh hysterically multiple times along the way)

hope to see you again soon, hopefully with something more specific, but not too specific...........
